about

"Named out of respect for man's finest creation, Mullet Bun merges today's vibes with the splice-edit approach of pioneer jazz producer Teo Macero (Bitches Brew). The track features 808's alongside acoustic drums, synths alongside a '74 Rhodes, and with the final master recorded on tape, this 'splice-jazz' single will please the ear of jazz listeners who enjoy the innovations of modern production and the improvisational energy and analog tone of those classic 70's era recordings. FFA Yussef Dayes, Derrick Hodges"

Mullet Bun is the first of a series of 'splice-jazz' singles: a production approach which involves recording many live and unquantized group sessions and then picking out the best moments to include in a trailer-like 3 minute single.

Track 1: Mullet Bun was first played in Dec 2020 at a recording session at Thin Thicket's Bearcave Studio's in Youngstown, Ohio (released in full as "Mullet Bun Jr."). In between songs on a recording sesh of new material, Unc D improvised the song's signature bassline and quickly latched on to the groove to make a jam. At the next new material recording sesh in Jan 2020, this infantile song idea was extended, resulting in 13 minutes of "source material" which was used to splice into the Mullet Bun single. When splicing, Unc used a post-structural approach which involves irregular phrasing, as the many moments from the 13 minute live version change between themselves without regard to dropping on the one. This spliced single was aided overdubs from Italian keyboardist Francesco Corrado, who added synths (heard best with his lead line at 1:30). In addition, Unc sequenced in drum samples of Cotton Mom playing found sound percussion (car keys, bottles) made by Thin Thicket. The samples are mostly placed around Damon's snare hits. The final overdub was done by Brandon Scott Coleman, as the cincinatti-based guitarist sent Unc ripping solo guitar. Coleman is heard best during his solo which follows the first change section at 1:27. The final line of production came with the mix being recorded on tape machine in the spring of 2021. Unc operated the tape machine while recording, in order to fiddle the speed/tuning knob at key points, giving the song a warping effect. The tape machine also gave the track its signature crushed sound, solidifying an authentic lofi vibe.

Track 2: "Mullet Bun Live," is the full live version of Mullet Bun which was performed in January of 2020, which was later spliced into a 3 min single. This full version is far looser than a conventional "live" recording, owing mainly to improvisational and experimental process of recording at an Unc D sesh. As the goal is to produce a edited, short splice single which features the best moments of the session, the goal of the live recording sessions is not to produce finished material, but rather raw source material which will later be refined in the finished product as a splice single. While no overdubs were added, the only post-production engineering this track features is Thin Thicket's trademark drum sequencing, which matches Damon's drum parts with 808s.

Track 3: After recording the master of Mullet Bun on to a tape machine, another take of the song was recorded with an alternative knob-fiddling performance done by Thin Thicket. Whereas Mullet Bun proper features mild knob-fiddling on the tape machine's speed/tuning knob, on this alternative version Thin Thicket radically operates the speed/tuning knob, bringing a unique change of phrasing for the track.

Track 4: Mullet Bun Jr started as an improvised jam during a dec 2020 new material recording sesh at Thin Thicket's Bearcave Studios in Youngstown, OH. Unc D improvised the riff in between songs, leading the band into a short jam to flesh out any possible directions for the infantile song idea. After the session, Thin Thicket engineered 808 midi matching for Gino's drum track, you could hear this especially with the high hat track up front. From there, Unc added some overdubbed drum sequences, gave it a quick master, and the result is Mullet Bun Jr.
