about

"Trash Happy is the first of a series of nu jazz singles which utilizes both my 'splice jazz' and 'iPad jazz' production styles. The best moments from a 12 min improvised studio outtake were spliced and edited down to 3 mins, after which many overdubs and a 'beat' ending was added using an iPad mini. Trash Happy's structure is unique, as it devolves from a full out jazz jam, to a hip-hop loop, to a trap beat.''

Trash Happy is the sister single to the forthcoming "Happy Trash," as Trash Happy is simply an exercise in modal improvisation meant to loosen up the band in between session takes of "Happy Trash." In February 2021, just weeks after the success of our first Spotify editorial playlist placement, BLDNTHNDR, a special session was called in to work with the track's principal soloist, Akron's Tommy Lehman (Acid Cats, Nathan Paul and the Admirables, Tommy Lehman Squadtet).

Three takes of "trash happy," basically modal jams in G minor, were recorded over the course of a whole night of going back and forth between Happy Trash and Trash Happy. From here, Unc D spliced together the best moments from the track, notably making one of Tommy's solos the key melodic component of this song. From there Unc added synths and bass which matched Tommy's solo (you'll hear a low choir patch under Tom's trumpet, this was played using laptop keys to control a Garageband midi synth). After adding synth, Unc added a few tracks of midi finger drums, also using his laptop's keys.

At this point, Unc brought the track over to Thin Thicket to for him to add the tracks signature ending trap beat. The ending beat consists of manipulated bass (arpeggio riff), a sample of Tom's trumpet, and a clean synth strings track and fierce drum programming by Thin Thicket. While conventionally many songs begin as a simple beat and then become more complicated, Trash Happy devolves from a dense jazz jam, to a hip hop loop (originally spliced by Unc) to the final trap beat which ends the song.
